Several students spend hours studying and cramming for exams, but then they still end up not doing well. They’re left confused, wondering what they did wrong – if this ever happens to you, you’re not alone. Fortunately, there are several ways to improve your studying habits to increase chances of success!

Don’t Cram – Space It Out

You need to allow time in between your study sessions for your brain to relax and recharge. Trying to cram major study sessions for long periods of time will cause you to have a burn out, and you’ll stop retaining information. So take breaks and space out your studying!

Practice!

Don’t just re-read your notes over and over again; instead, take time to actually practice what you’re studying. This will help you better understand the material you’re reviewing and learn how to solve the problems.

Test Yourself

One of the most effective ways to study before an exam is to test yourself to see how well you can do on an exam without using notes and while being times. Take any practice tests you can find, and then try to figure out what you did wrong.

Use Visuals

Whether it be pictures, diagrams, or figures, a lot of people find using some sort of visuals helpful when studying. If you feel like your notes aren’t helping much or you’re completely lost on a concept, consider finding some images to implement into your study routine.

Find Examples

It is very useful to find example problems/questions of the concepts that you are studying. By doing this, you are able to see the steps or thinking processes that need to be done.

Make a Study Schedule

And stick to it! Plan how many hours you plan on spending reviewing a certain topic, when you will take your practice test, what time you’ll look for examples, etc.. Studying is a lot less overwhelming when you have a schedule or plan for how you will space it out.
